Bargeboards do a similar job, but they run along the sloping edges of a gabled roof rather than the horizontal eaves. All three components help to protect the timber structure of your roof from wind, rain and moisture.

Signs That Your Fascias or Soffits Need Attention
Some signs are easy to spot from the ground. Others you might only notice once a problem has been going on for a while. Here is what to look out for.
Flaking or peeling paint is often the first thing people notice. It looks cosmetic, but it usually means the wood underneath is absorbing moisture.
Soft or spongy timber is a sign that rot has already taken hold. If the board gives when you press it, it needs replacing rather than painting over.
Sagging gutters can point to a failing fascia board. Gutters are fixed to the fascia, and if the board has rotted or pulled away, the guttering will start to drop and pull clear of the roofline.
Birds nesting in your roof space or wasps getting in through gaps at the eaves are a strong indicator that your soffits have cracked, split or come away. Both can cause additional damage if left unchecked.

uPVC has become the go-to choice for replacements, and for good reason. It does not rot, does not need painting, and with normal care will last for many years. Ventilated uPVC soffits also allow airflow into the roof space, which helps to prevent condensation building up in the loft.

Capping Over Versus Full Replacement
You may have heard of capping, which involves fitting new uPVC boards over the existing timber rather than removing the old material first. It can be quicker and slightly cheaper, but there is a real drawback worth understanding.
If the timber underneath is already soft or showing early signs of rot, capping over it seals the moisture in rather than removing the problem. The rot can continue to spread out of sight, and by the time you notice something is wrong, the damage is often more extensive than it would have been with a full replacement.
