Repointing that keeps water out and tiles secure
The mortar that beds and points your ridge tiles, hips, verges and chimney is what holds large parts of your roof together and keeps water out. Over the years that mortar dries out, cracks and crumbles away, and once it does, ridge tiles work loose and rain finds its way straight into the roof. At Dexters Build we offer expert repointing and ridge tile re-bedding that restores a weather-tight, secure finish and protects the rest of the roof. We are a family-run business with over 10 years' experience, and every job is backed by our fully guaranteed workmanship.
We work throughout Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, including Leighton Buzzard, Luton, Dunstable, Bedford, Milton Keynes and the surrounding towns and villages. Every quote is free and comes with no obligation.
Why old, cracked mortar is a problem
Mortar is not meant to last forever. Frost, heat and movement all take their toll, and once it starts to fail it lets water into places it should never reach. Catching it early is far cheaper than dealing with the damage it causes.
- Slipped and loose ridge tiles. When the bedding mortar crumbles, ridge and hip tiles slip, lift in the wind and can even come off completely.
- Water getting in. Cracked pointing on chimneys, verges and ridges gives rain a clear path into the roof, leading to damp and rot.
- Damp inside the home. Failed mortar is a common cause of damp patches on ceilings and walls. Where damp has already taken hold, our damp proofing service can help put it right.
- Damage that spreads. Left alone, a small area of failed pointing soon becomes a wider problem affecting timbers and tiles.
The repointing work we carry out
Repointing covers several different parts of the roof, and we handle them all with the right techniques and materials for a long-lasting finish.
Ridge and hip tile re-bedding and repointing
Where the bedding mortar under ridge and hip tiles has failed, we lift the tiles, clear out the old mortar and re-bed them properly before repointing the joints. This is the most reliable way to stop slipped ridge tiles and is far more durable than simply smearing fresh mortar over crumbling joints.
Chimney repointing
Chimneys take a battering from the weather, and the mortar between the bricks is often the first thing to fail. We rake out the old, perished mortar and repoint the brickwork to keep the stack sound and watertight. For chimneys that are beyond pointing, our chimney rebuilding service can rebuild the stack from the base up.
Verge pointing
The mortar along the verges, where the tiles meet the gable end, protects the edge of the roof from wind and rain. We repoint failing verges, or fit dry verge systems where appropriate, to keep the roof edge secure.
Flexible compounds and traditional mortar
The right material matters. Traditional sand and cement mortar is still used for plenty of jobs, but it can crack as the roof moves and expands. Where it suits the roof, we use modern flexible pointing compounds that move with the building and resist cracking, giving a longer-lasting, weather-tight result. We will explain which option is best for your roof and why. Repointing often goes hand in hand with wider repair work, and any loose or damaged tiles we find can be sorted through our roof repairs service at the same time.
