If you are thinking about replacing your old polycarbonate or glass conservatory roof with a solid tiled system, the question you will almost certainly ask first is: how much does it cost? It is a fair question, and the honest answer is that it depends on several things specific to your home and your conservatory. There is no single price that fits every job.
At Dexters Build, we are a family-run roofing company with over ten years of experience across Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. We carry out conservatory roof replacement as part of our wider roofing work, and we think it helps to explain what actually goes into the price before you invite anyone to quote. That way, you know what you are paying for and why.
The Size and Shape of Your Conservatory
This is the most straightforward factor. A larger conservatory needs more materials and takes longer to complete, so the cost reflects that. The shape matters too. A simple lean-to with a single slope is more straightforward to tile than a Victorian or Edwardian conservatory with multiple facets, hips and angles. The more complex the roofline, the more skilled work is involved in getting the finish right.
The Condition of the Frame, Walls and Base
This is one of the most important parts of the whole process, and it is where an honest survey makes a real difference. A lightweight insulated tiled roof is designed to sit on your existing frame and base, but before any work begins we carry out a structural check to make sure everything is sound enough to take it.
If the frame, walls or base need any strengthening or remedial work, we flag that clearly and explain what is needed and why. Some conservatories need nothing at all. Others have frames or bases that have moved or deteriorated over the years and need attention first. The condition of what is already there has a direct bearing on the overall cost of the project.
The Tiles You Choose
Not all tiles are the same. The lightweight insulated tile systems we use come in different profiles, finishes and colours, and the specification you choose will affect the price. Some homeowners want something that closely matches the roof on the main house. Others are happy with a clean, modern finish. We will talk you through the options and help you find something that works for your home and your budget.
The Internal Finish and Lighting
One of the things that makes a solid tiled roof so much more comfortable to live with is the insulated plastered ceiling that goes in underneath. That internal finish is part of the job, and it transforms the feel of the space. Many of our customers also choose to have downlights fitted as part of the ceiling, which adds a little to the overall cost but makes a real difference to how the room looks and works all year round. The internal specification is something you can tailor to suit what you want from the space.
Removing and Disposing of the Old Roof
The existing polycarbonate or glass roof has to come off before the new one goes on. That takes time and labour, and the old material needs to be taken away and disposed of responsibly. This is always included in what we quote for, but it is worth knowing that it forms part of the overall scope of work.
Gutters and Any Low-Pitch Sections
A new roof needs gutters that work properly alongside it. If your existing guttering is tired, damaged or no longer the right fit for the new roofline, replacing or adjusting it is sensible and is something we factor in. Some conservatories also have a low-pitch or flat section where the roof meets the house wall. These areas are properly sealed as part of the job, and if any flat roofing work is needed to do that correctly, that will be reflected in the quote.
Building Regulations
Replacing a lightweight roof with a heavier solid one can fall under building regulations, and we handle that as part of the project. It is not something you need to worry about managing yourself; we take care of it.
